6 beds. One home. Everything you didn't know.
Most families have never heard of a 6-bed residential care home. But once they find one? They wonder why nobody told them sooner.
A real home. Not a facility.
A 6-bed residential care home (called an RCFE in California) is exactly what it sounds like — a real home, in a real neighborhood, licensed to care for up to six residents. No nurses' stations. No institutional hallways. A kitchen, a garden, a living room. Caregivers who know your parent by name — by the way they take their coffee and what makes them laugh.
What families get wrong
"6-bed homes are just cheaper nursing homes."
They're licensed residential settings — often warmer, more personal, and sometimes more affordable than large facilities.
"My parent would be isolated in a small home."
Consistent relationships with the same 5 neighbors and caregivers can be far more connected than a 200-person facility.
"There aren't many of these homes."
California has thousands of licensed RCFEs. The challenge is knowing how to find and evaluate quality ones. That's our job.
